142nd Anniversary of La Vanguardia and La Vanguardia Awards

We congratulate our partner Grupo Godó on the 142nd anniversary of La Vanguardia, whose celebration gave rise to the first edition of the La Vanguardia Awards.

Among the winners were Marc Puig, president of Puig, and Grant Dalton, patron of the America's Cup and to whom we presented the Sport Cultura Barcelona Award in the Sports category this past May.

Josep Mateu, elected new president of Sport Cultura Barcelona

Josep Mateu, president of the RACC, has been elected the new president of Sport Cultura Barcelona in the framework of the Extraordinary General Assembly that was held today at the IESE headquarters. In this way, Mateu succeeds Albert Agustí, who has directed the entity for eight years.

Mateu, who in recent years has held one of the three vice-presidencies of the entity, has a deep knowledge of the institution, its activities and its general operation. This relationship with Sport Cultura Barcelona and his experience at the helm of the RACC support him in assuming this responsibility.

The new President, who plans to meet soon with all the representatives of the different organizations that make up Sport Cultura Barcelona, has declared: “for me it is an honor to assume this presidency and I am very excited to be able to contribute my knowledge and experience. My objective is to foster public-private collaboration by promoting dialogue between institutions, citizens and agents in the sport and culture sector”. For Josep Mateu "one of the great challenges that Barcelona faces is to maintain and expand its position as a benchmark in the organization of major world events and from Sport Cultura Barcelona we will work to achieve the necessary consensus and make it possible".

Career of Josep Mateu

From a professional point of view, Josep Mateu has held managerial positions as CEO or general manager in different companies since 1978, including the RACC itself. He later served as its vice president between 2012 and 2015, when he became the current president. He has a degree in Economics and Business Administration from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and an MBA from IESE, in addition to having trained in specialization courses in Management and Strategic Planning at the London Business School, in the Senior Management Program for Digital Marketing and Internet Business at the Higher Institute for Internet Development (ISDI) and at the FIA University Senior Executive Program at the Columbia Business School in New York. In 2001 he won the Manager of the Year award from the Spanish Association of Managers (AED).

The legacy of Albert Agustí

Albert Agustí, who has been president of Sport Cultura Barcelona for the last eight years, has led different projects, among which stands out the firm and determined commitment to promote the candidacy of the Barcelona Winter Olympic Games. But it also highlights the social consolidation of the entity and the Sport Cultura Barcelona Awards, which have become a benchmark for society, both for the winners and for those attending the annual ceremony. Likewise, during his tenure, the number of members of the institution has increased, integrating new cultural and sports entities from Barcelona, as well as companies.

When it comes to taking stock, Albert Agustí considers that “the project that had marked me out with the colleagues on the Board has achieved the main objectives, despite the period affected by the pandemic. I believe that we have amplified and consolidated our influence in society, a fundamental aspect to promote sport and culture, which are two pillars for everyone's development”.

Albert Agustí, who took over from Manuel Carreras Fisas, has been the second president of the entity founded by Juan Antonio Samaranch, who was its promoter and honorary president.

XVII Edition of Sport Cultura Barcelona Awards

On May 23, we celebrated the XVII edition of the Sport Cultura Barcelona Awards, which took place at the RBA headquarters and brought together different personalities from the cultural, sports and institutional world of the city, as well as Barcelona's civil society figures.

The winners were the sailor Grant Dalton, in the 'Sports' category; the filmmaker Carla Simón, in the 'Culture' category, who received the award on her behalf Judit Colell, president of the Catalan Film Academy, and the director and composer Antoni Ros-Marbà, in the 'Trajectory' category, as well as the former soccer player, former coach and activist against ALS disease, Juan Carlos Unzué.

Grant Dalton received the award from Jordi Puig, president of the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona, and indicated that we remember Barcelona for its Olympic spirit from the 1992 Olympic Games and that they thought that it was important to recover these sensations in sporting terms.

As for her, after presenting the award to Judit Colell Neus Aranda, president of the National Theater of Catalonia, Carla Simón expressed through a video that "I am very excited and I am very grateful for this award because it values a way of culture like cinema. She also pointed out that "it is a great honor to become part of this group of people previously awarded in the Culture category."

Antoni Ros-Marbà, who received the award from Joaquim Uriach, president of the Palau de la Música, announced that in two years he will premiere an opera about Walter Benjamin at the Liceu and has indicated that "it was a great surprise and I am very happy and I accept the award with great enthusiasm”.

Juan Carlos Unzué received a long applause when he went up to collect the Special Mention that the Jury awarded him and Albert Agustí gave him, a recognition that until now had only been obtained by the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital, in the 2017 edition, and Josep Lluís Vilaseca, member of the COE and Secretary General of Esports of the Generalitat de Catalunya, in 2019. For Unzué, this recognition allows visibility to the ALS and claimed that "every time you remember me you remember everyone my sick companions, for that I'm very grateful." He also expressed that he has the feeling that "we are not prioritizing people" and encouraged everyone to support him in the task of disclosing the disease to fight against it and provide dignity to the sick.

The Sport Cultura Barcelona Awards honor a person, group or institution that has been relevant in the field of Culture and Sports, as well as the Career Award in recognition of a person, group or entity for their professional career in any field.

The procedure for choosing the winners consisted of two phases. First of all, journalists and members of Sport Cultura Barcelona proposed a series of pre-candidates and in a meeting determined three finalists for each of the categories. The list of shortlisted finalists went on to the second phase, in which the members of Sport Cultura Barcelona voted in successive elimination rounds until they obtained the winners.

Delivery of the 2022 Award Sport Cultura Barcelona
